The only difference is the source of the savings being\u00a0invested.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketriders.com\/investing\/traditional-ira-investing-basics\/\">traditional IRA<\/a> is funded by cash contributions by the saver.\u00a0A rollover IRA is funded by moving existing savings from an employer-run plan after you leave a job.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you already own\u00a0a traditional IRA you can always choose to roll your workplace savings\u00a0into that account. You do not need to open a new IRA to do a rollover.<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits<\/h2>\n<p>For many savers\u00a0it can be beneficial to &#8220;roll over&#8221; old retirement plans to an IRA.<\/p>\n<p>For one, you gain more control over the investment options. \u00a0Many employer plans by design are\u00a0limited in their investment choices.<\/p>\n<p>If your employer plan offers a low-cost, self-directed brokerage account, however, it may be beneficial to stay. These are rare, however.<\/p>\n<p>A caveat: If you leave your employer after age 55, most workplace plans will allow for penalty-free withdrawals.
